A Behind the Scenes Look at Julio Le Parc: Form into Action

“This is a very ambitious exhibition. It takes a lot of build up, there’s a lot of architecture and a lot of infrastructure that we need in order to show those works. So, it’s a huge commitment to put this exhibition together. What viewers will experience in the exhibition is the space going from sort of a more… kind of lighter… you know, lit area to darker and darker spaces that become more and more dynamic in how they interact with the viewer. It becomes almost a labyrinth of visual experiences that are quite unusual. Almost like a “fun house” type of environment. It’s transforming the museum into this more fun, more interactive, more dynamic space. Our audiences won’t recognize the museum because they’re so transformed architecturally and the perceptive experiences are so different.”

Outside, the terrace was activated by a live performance by eccentric electric rock band Jacuzzi Boys and exhibition themed art-making. As the sun set, members joined the Art Fair Survival Party at PAMM Third Thursdays Lounge for complimentary drinks provided by Salvación Mezcal, Kim Crawford Wines and Beck’s. This month’s lounge featured exhibition-inspired manicures by Vanity Projects, informal modeling by Bloomingdale’s, makeup stations by GUCCI Beauty, and special artist watches by Swatch.

On view through March 19, 2017, Julio Le Parc: Form into Action features over 100 works that spark a variety of visual and physical experiences. Including major installations and rarely seen works on paper and archival materials, the exhibition is a long-overdue exploration of Le Parc’s central role in twentieth-century art history.

Artist Ulla von Brandenburg on her exhibition “It Has a Golden Sun and an Elderly Grey Moon”

Alluding to diverse histories rooted in Western traditions, Ulla von Brandenburg (b. 1974, Karlsruhe, Germany; lives in Paris) makes films, drawings, performances, wall paintings, and installations to create multilayered narratives. Her work often references late 19th century expressionist theater, magic, occultism, pre-Freudian psychoanalysis, color theory, and early 20th century Hollywood cinema to investigate how these “pre-archaic” forms relate to modern-day social norms. She creates her own visual vocabulary, combining a range of media to make immersive installations that reconsider contemporary collective experiences. Von Brandenburg often uses the motif of the theater curtain—a threshold between reality and artifice—interpreted as a tool to challenge the relationship between actors, audience, and the stage. She is also interested in the study of European carnival as a legitimate form of social transgression when individuals employ the notion of mask to explore alternative identities. Engaging with popular customs, von Brandenburg’s work takes the viewer to the space that separates reality and imagination, where time is insignificant, prompting new collective associations. At PAMM, the artist will produce a large-scale installation at the museum’s double height project gallery. Project Gallery: Ulla von Brandenburg is curated by María Elena Ortiz, Assistant Curator, at PAMM.

The New York-based artist’s paintings feature large brushstrokes and diverse paint placements in vibrant color configurations. His gestural marks are often shown partially fragmented, as if the brushstrokes are elements of collage that have been cut and placed in disjunctive ways. Reed has experimented with methods of painterly abstraction for more than five decades, pushing and expanding material limits, forms, and references. Since the 1970s, his works have drawn upon and critiqued the legacies of Abstract Expressionism, Minimalism, and Conceptual art, while continually responding to new forms of image making taken from cinema, television, and digital media.

About the Artists Featured at PAMM Shop

AHOLSNIFFSGLUE and Werner Blumenthal
At the heart of every AHOL JEWELRY piece is the soul of a true creative, the logic of an engineer and thus, the marriage of beauty & technology. The walls of the city recount his childhood angst. The scene recognizes his passion, and now the epicenter of glamour, excitement and art sees itself through his iconic eyes. The next logical step is to immortalize his vision in precious metals. Inspired by the energy of Miami, Ahol is a brand of simplicity, geometry and obscurity; it is that obscureness that makes the abstract real. When Werner Blumenthal, award winning engineer and designer met with David Anasagasti, rugged visionary and conceptualist, it forged a friendship which led to an alchemy of style and design. From the street to the studio, Ahol is true expression.

AMLgMATD
AMLgMATD is a collaborative studio established by Laz Ojalde and Natalie Zlamalova in 2014, experimenting in works of art, design objects and environments that reflect Laz and Natalie’s quirky points of view and love of unusual and overlooked materials. Inspired by patterns and colors mirrored in the everyday world, they look at their surroundings with a fresh pair of eyes and redefine it with a bit of wit and humor.

Laz is a Miami native, Natalie is a Czech transplant. Both were educated in California in the Art & Design fields and met during their artists residency at the ArtCenter/South Florida on Lincoln Road. Their recent projects include a full bus wrap for the Miami-Dade Transit, a site-specific interactive environment at the Moore Building in Miami’s Design District, a sculptural performance art space at Untitled Art Fair 2015, the debut of their latest furniture concept at ICFF New York, and a 16’ outdoor installation at the Deering Estate, to name a few.

AMLgMATD’s latest product line focuses on the application of a familiar material onto a new form, and an unexplored material into a familiar setting. Their upcoming project includes a collaboration with Miami’s Exile Books at this year’s UNTITLED Art Fair, providing their signature WEBSTR Stool as public seating throughout the Fair.

Dafné Alleno
It all began with the idea of creating elegant and edgy jewels easy to put on and remove. Combining lightness and refinement, each single piece is comfortable to wear, so light, such a “second skin” jewel. Born in Mexico, Dafné has worked 7 years in the high-end French house of YSL where she learns feminine luxury and French refinement. In and out between Miami and Paris, she has decided to set off to create her own jewelry brand for which she received the “Tiffany jewelry award” during Miami Beach Fashion week in March 2011. She opened officially her namesake company in 2012 and start to become popular across the borders.

Michelle Weinberg
Michelle Weinberg is a visual artist living and working in New York City and Miami. She creates works in painting and collage, designs rugs, tiles, mosaic and paint murals, and produces art for architecture and public spaces. Her imagery inhabits a “Pretend Dimension” in which elastic perspectives, personalized geometries, and fictitious architectures elaborate stage-set like narratives. Her works in all media are conceived as vivid backdrops for human activity.

December 27, 2016

This community gathering comes at a time when issues of gender equality and identity are at the forefront of cultural discourse in the United States. Now Be Here #3 illustrated the collective diversity and inclusiveness of powerful arts community. It was an important moment for artists to come together, in celebration of individual and collective power and to be present with one another. Gender equity and questions of representation, inclusivity and social justice are at the core of what PAMM does—these are among the most pressing issues of our time and they are at the fore of the institution’s thinking. You can find the photograph documenting the event at nowbeherela.com.
